Way back in 1982 when Bono nicked the words
of one of King David’s most familiar psalms for U2’s “40”, he only got as far
as the first three verses. He missed out on my favorite:
“You have multiplied, O Lord my God, your wondrous deeds and your thoughts toward us; none can
compare with you! I will proclaim and tell of them, yet they are more than can be told.”
Anyone who undertakes the task of telling
his fellow men and women of the Lord’s wondrous deeds is fighting a losing
battle. Human life is way too short, human intellect is staggeringly insufficient,
and no earthly language is up to the job.
And don’t even get me started on God’s “thoughts
toward us”.
But that’s the windmill we’ve been tilting
at here at Coming Untrue ever since
Bernie’s inaugural post on December 11, 2013 under the unlikely name of Statweasel. They are “more
than can be told”, and four years hasn’t got us through the first sentence
of the first paragraph of the prologue.
Nostra culpa. Oh well.
To be fair, it’s rare for our subject
matter to rise to the exalted level contemplated by the psalmist. Much of our
time in this Internet space is spent hashing out how we ought to live our lives
in consideration of God’s thoughts toward us and the things he has done on our
behalf. Other times we’re just gazing at the world around us, caught up in how
far both it and we fall short of God’s intended purposes and glory. And until
the day we all fall on our faces before the throne of God, that’s how it’s
likely to be.
Thanks to so many for making the journey
with us, more of you this year than ever. That’s encouraging.
How long are we going to keep this up? Who
knows. I’ve learned not to waste a lot of time predicting what may be, since I’m
almost always wrong. My guess? So long as we have sufficient time and energy
and so long as the spectre of Internet censorship remains merely spectral.
Which is to say so long as the Lord wills.
Love in Christ,
Tom, IC and Bernie
