Time and Chance

Ecclesiastes is a difficult book. Still, its relentlessly frank take on the unhappy business of living in a fallen world rings true for many believers and seekers alike.

It isn’t history. It’s too tentative to be called truly doctrinal, and, while not entirely impractical, there is a notable absence of “God says do this!” about it. It sometimes comes across more as fatherly advice than the lists of rules, rewards and punishments found in the Prophets and Pentateuch.

Solomon is the real deal. He speaks the truth, but he’s speaking it from what, in biblical terms, constitutes a rather unusual perspective.

Like the Song of Songs and Esther, Ecclesiastes’ place in the larger canon of scripture does not jump out and announce itself. It requires a little serious exploration and meditation.
