A Decade Down

Sunday’s post marked ten years of daily commentary, Bible study and engagement with the culture at ComingUntrue. Today’s Anonymous Asks begins a new decade. How far we go down that road remains to be seen, as we continue to append the words “if the Lord wills” to our plans. Friends, family members and co-workers are struggling with the unexpected developments of one sort or another that invariably come with age; it seems improbable we will all continue to cruise along in comparative ease indefinitely.

Either way, we have much for which to be grateful.

We thank the Lord for the tremendous privilege and awesome responsibility of handling the word of truth, as well as for health, strength, good friends and bracing Christian fellowship, continued employment in tough times (in IC’s case, a rare pension fund that has not been egregiously mishandled), and frequent words of encouragement from our brothers and sisters in Christ.

The past decade has seen interesting times for the church in North America and around the world. Where is it all going? Scripture gives us the big picture but not enough of the fine details to be confident of our own impressions in the short term, so I will resist the temptation to speculate. What we can say with assurance is that “You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you.” Isaiah wrote that in the context of a nation anticipating the Lord coming to punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquity, and it remains as true for members of Christ’s church as it was for the Judeans who first heard and read it.

The events leading up to this most of us will view from afar. We await a trumpet, a judgment seat and a marriage supper, followed by the unearned and inexpressible honor of riding out of heaven on white horses in the train of the one called Faithful and True, who judges and makes war in righteousness.

Won’t that be something?

Love in Christ,

Tom
